- Phillis Wheatley was named in honor of Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American poet, symbolizing pride in education and heritage
- Phillis Wheatley was orginally a K-12 school. Post-1969, the school continued as an elementary institution under Orange County Public Schools
- In 2013 the aging building was demolished and rebuilt. A new $16M state-of-the-art facility featuring modern classrooms, media center, secure two-story design, and improved technology opened in 2014
- The only elementary school with a gymnasium
- Currently serving pre-K through 5th grade, with about 400 students enrolled
- The school—mascot the Panthers—continues honoring its roots while striving for academic excellence (recent school grade: C)
